Oats – our friendly neighborhood super food

Ancient, but in no way old-fashioned. For thousands of years, we in Europe have been nourishing ourselves on these earthy grains. And as a nutritional heavyweight, it is now celebrating a well-deserved comeback. Why the humble oat deserves a place of honor in your pantry:

A super grain for your body

Is it any coincidence that oatmeal is a typical breakfast food? Long before the time of scientific analysis, people seemed fully aware that a small bowl of oats could set you up for the day. Today we know that the oat is one of the most nutritional varieties of cereal grain around. It supplies complex carbohydrates and around 12 % of plant protein. It also contains plenty of vitamins and minerals, such as magnesium, potassium, calcium, zinc and phosphor. Its iron content is even comparable to some meats. And thanks to a dietary fiber by the name of beta glucan, oats even help you reduce your cholesterol levels.

This impressive list of ingredients ensures a battery of beneficial effects on the body. Thanks to their complex carbohydrates, oats release energy slowly and steadily. An “oaty” breakfast not only fills you up, it also keeps your blood sugar levels stable so that you can keep the hunger pangs at bay. Studies show that it can also help to stabilize cholesterol levels. In short, it’s extraordinarily good for you. Our skin will respond favorably to the vitamin B2, biotin and niacin that it contains. An oat face mask moisturizes, calms and alleviates impurities.

Recipe for a quick face mask: Mix 3 tbsp ground oats, 1 tbsp hot water and 1 tbsp honey, leave to cool for a little while, then apply to the skin. Leave to work for 10-15 minutes, then wash off.

From ghastly gruel to the breakfast bowl

“Eat your gruel; it’s good for you!” Forget the bland and stodgy mush of yesteryear. Whether chewier or more smooth, oat flakes have been given a makeover and are available in many flavors. We’ve grown rather fond of oats, and make our delicious Oat Drinks from it. We buy our organic oats from farmers in the beautiful region of Lower Austria, as the soil there is excellent for cultivation, as are the climatic conditions. Once at the processing plant, it takes a hot bath and is boiled up. Fermentation produces a liquid similar to milk, to which we add just a smattering of ingredients such as sunflower oil and salt. Any sugar remains, as it is produced naturally during manufacture.
